Childhood Eczema

Treating Baby Eczema

Try treating eczema by rubbing petroleum jelly on your baby's skin after a bath.   The oil from petroleum jelly will penetrate the skin leaving it soft and smooth. Pat skin dry with a soft towel before apply the petroleum jelly.  Keeping skin moisturized will go a long way to keeping eczema away.

Infant and Child Eczema

Statistics say one out of ten children gets eczema especially before the age of five. The most common places for eczema in babies and children up to 5 is on the forehead and cheeks and is typically red, inflamed rashes with bumps. This can become very painful and even unbearable for children if it develops into fluid-filled blisters that may eventually burst.  In older children, round, red, scaly patches are commonly found on knees, wrists, ankles and elbows.

How to help keep your child comfortable

  • Use only cotton clothing which has been washed with safe, more natural, washing products
  • Use mild and gentle soap with warm water when bathing, preferably fragrance free soap.  If skin is painful, replace soap with scent-free natural cream which will also moisturize the skin.  (It might seem strange to use cream to wash, but it is a very good alternative!)
  • Moisturize regularly and tell your child to avoid scratching and rubbing the affected areas.
  • Keep finger nails trimmed right down and clean! (Very important!) to avoid making it worse.
  • Remember natural remedies for eczema are the key … this includes your environment – toxins and chemicals (check cleaning products, etc) in your home will retard healing.

There is nothing worse than seeing your little one suffer.  If you have discovered eczema, red patches, skin irritations, it's time to take action.  The above tips are a few measures to keep your child comfortable.
