Natural Remedies for Eczema

There is a solution to getting rid of your eczema!   Treating the symptoms will help with relief and temporarily keep eczema at bay but beating eczema for good means you will need a complete program.   A safe, natural eczema cure will treat the cause and help you understand why your skin is reacting this way.  There is a reason why you have eczema and you need to get to the bottom of it in order to get rid of it!

Relieve Eczema - 5 tips to stay comfortable

1.    For itchiness, apply cool, damp compresses.   A cool compress is a cloth dipped in cold water that is wrung out and applied directly to the skin that itches. When first placed on the skin, the itching or pain may become more intense, however this soon subsides.  This will help relieve inflammation and itching.  Try a thin layer of petroleum jelly onto the skin before applying the cool compress so that you moisturize the skin too.

2.    Don't scratch -- scratching can cause scarring, infection, increased pigmentation, and thickening of the skin. Instead, gently pat the skin with your fingers (as opposed to the palm of your hand) as this is more effective.

3.  Avoid hot water showers and baths if your skin is inflamed.  Reduce the temperature of your shower or bath from hot to warm or even cool.   Also, avoid overheated rooms as this can aggravate irritated skin.

4.   Avoid soaps and detergents.  This is a big one!  Not enough can be said about the harsh chemicals found especially in soaps and detergents, and if you have eczema this will definitely make it worse. Normal soap is alkaline and can further dry out your skin. Soap and detergent-based shampoos should be avoided, and instead soap and shampoo substitutes should be used, or even try a more natural aqua based cream instead of soap.  (Even though it seems a bit strange to wash with a moisturizing cream, it is very beneficial).  Bath oils can also be helpful, but once again seek out a natural product.  Always try the more natural remedies for eczema.

5.   Moisturizing your skin is one of the easiest and most important measures in preventing itching and scratching, as well as reducing eczema flare-ups. Be careful to avoid eczema creams and  moisturizers that contain perfumes and preservatives which can irritate the skin.  Moisturizers should be applied at least twice a day all over the skin.  The best time to apply the moisturizer is straight after a shower or bath to help seal in the moisture from bathing.

    Natural eczema treatment using oatmeal

Oatmeal is one of the best dry skin and eczema treatments around.  Known for its healing properties, oatmeal also assists with retaining moisture in the skin which is critical to beating eczema.  You can make your own oatmeal natural eczema treatments at home such as an oatmeal bath which is far more beneficial to your skin (and your immune system) than buying some bath oil off the shelf.  You can find other ideas for oatmeal remedies below as well as a video on how to make an oatmeal bath.

You will be amazed how oatmeal can provide some welcome relief to dry, itching skin.  The best type of oatmeal to relieve itching is colloidal oatmeal. Colloidal oatmeal is still made from oats, but it is different to the breakfast oatmeal we know, although many people do use the breakfast cereal oatmeal as an eczema remedy.

Face cleanserMix equal parts honey and oatmeal to a paste and apply for a great face cleanser or anywhere else where eczema is present …  For a smoother paste, grind the oatmeal in a food processor, or similar.   Apply to skin and then rinse off shortly after applying, or lie back and relax for half an hour and let its healing properties get to work.

Did you know that honey contains 3 amazing properties absolutely ideal for treating eczema?  These properties are antimicrobial, antioxidant and hygroscopic, making honey a very popular food as well as medicine.  Hygroscopic means that when exposed to air it naturally absorbs moisture in from the air which is great for eczema and other skin inflamations as it can help prevent scarring by keeping the skin moist.  It keeps the skin hydrated, which is a critical requirement for eczema.  It is well known that honey has antibacterial, healing properties and when applied to irritated skin can prevent bacteria from entering.

Honey's antioxidants help to eliminate free radicals in the body and help the skin to rejuvenate and stay young-looking.  This is a highly recommended natural eczema treatment.

A soothing bath:   For a luxurious, healing bath, process oatmeal (preferably organic) to a fine powder -  use your blender or liquidizer to do this.  Grinding the oatmeal helps it absorb liquid and when added to water this produces a milky substance and makes the water quite "slimey" – almost what bathoil does to water. As you are running your bath, sprinkle the fine oatmeal (about half a cup) under running water and mix it in with your hands.  (You could also mix the fine oatmeal with half a cup of dried powdered milk in a bag.  Powdered milk promotes a comfortable moisture level due to the gentle fats in milk).

Oatmeal baths are ideal for relieving dryness, and the itching associated with dryness.  Enjoy a nice soak and rinse off with warm water, not soap, and feel the difference. Try it!   Gently pat skin dry so that you leave the calming, beneficial properties of the oatmeal on your skin.  Colloidal oatmeal is also beneficial because of its natural ingredients which make the skin softer and smoother.

Exfoliating masque:   Oatmeal mixed with egg whites is a great exfoliating masque. Mix them together, smooth onto the face and rinse off when egg whites have dried. Don't leave on for longer than this.

The oatmeal provides the soothing  natural eczema treatment and the egg whites leave the skin soft and smooth.  The proteins in egg whites constrict as they dry on your face and this pulls at the dried layer of cells on top of your skin. When you wash off the egg white, you also wash off some of these loose cells, leaving your skin softer and smoother.  Try it!

The skin is the largest part of a human body, but one that is often not considered for being so vital. But its importance means that anything affecting the skin, or causing harm to it, should not be neglected or ignored. Eczema is a condition that can affect the skin, and there are numerous different types of eczema occurring in all people, right from infants to the elderly. So, it is necessary to treat them. Treatment of eczema by home remedies is found to be very effective. Below are listed some of the eczema home remedies that can be used as potential cures. You can try out several types of eczema home remedies to get instant relief from its frustrating symptoms.

    * Take a nutmeg and rub it on a smooth stone, along with some drops of water. Formulate a smooth paste out of this mixture, and apply this paste on the affected area for some time. Then rinse it well with water.

    * Vitamin E, applied on the infected areas, will provide you with relief from the itching. Vitamin E is said to be a natural phenomenon for the treatment of Eczema, as it will eliminate the different microbes causing the itching and the irritation. But, remember that you should never utilize synthetic Vitamin E on your body, as your body is unable to use it. The synthetic Vitamin E contains “dl” instead of “d” in front of its label- dl-alpha tocopherol.

    * Wash your skin with the given solution. Take one teaspoonful of white oak bark, one teaspoonful of comfrey root, 1 teaspoonful of slippery elm bark and two cups of water. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly and then boil them for about half an hour. Then you can use this solution to wash the area that is affected by the eczema.

    * Get some extract or a lotion of the blueberry leaf. Blueberry leaves contain a natural form of acid in them that assists the decrease of swelling and inflammation in the affected areas. Applying it on a regular basis can help you treat eczema for a long time.

    * Use moisturizers or emollients to moisten your skin for a lessening in itching. You should try to moisturize your skin as often as you can, and whenever you can. It is also advisable to use emollient, which is just like a moisturizer but it has fat in it that helps in sealing the moisture in your skin. Therefore, it is advantageous to use it after bathing or showering to fasten the moisture in your body itself.

    * Make a mixture by mixing a teaspoon of camphor and a teaspoon of sandalwood paste. Apply this paste on the infected areas.

    * Zinc is also found to be effective in treating eczema. Take this orally or apply it on to the skin, in order to see results.

    * Wash the affected area with pine tar soap.

    * Drinking tomato juice regularly also helps in curing the symptoms.

A good diet for eczema sufferers is essential, but your diet will never be a cause of eczema. Food that you take in may cause allergic reactions, which can worsen eczema, but every precaution should be taken to ensure this does not occur.

Eczema is basically caused by the genes present in the person. If you have allergy or are sensitive to some foods, then it is healthier to steer clear of that food. Or else, these foods may trigger eczema in you. Some foods that are likely to trigger eczema in you are dairy products, preservatives, eggs, citrus fruits and nuts.
